What to Wear: Senior Pictures, Family Photos, and Headshots
Clothing ideas for your photoshoot
There are several factors to take into consideration when picking outfits for your photoshoot.
1. What’s your style? If you’re casual, it’s fine to dress casual for the session. If you’re more formal, then bring that look with your clothing. If you’re planning a senior session, you’ll want variety! Seniors – read more here.
2. In general, long sleeves photograph better than patterns, which can be distracting, and long sleeves + pants are better than short sleeves + shorts. However, please keep in mind the season. Wearing a full suit in the middle of summer can be HOT.
3. If you’re considering investing in one or more wall portraits from your session, you may want to coordinate your clothing to match the room where your portrait(s) will live. Professionals seeking a headshot: consider incorporating your brand colors.
Here are some color options to consider
Blues + Khaki
This is a simple color palette with lots of flexibility. Blues blend well, so you don’t have to worry about the having every blue the exact same. Everyone has either jeans or khakis, which makes it easy to pull together a consistent look.
Gold + Neutrals
The gold adds a nice “pop” and brings a good energy to the session.
Gray + Mauve
This palette has a subtle elegance. Mauve is a warm color which tends to be flattering in front of the camera. Mix light and dark grays to provide contrast.
Blues + Grays
This is another easy color palette with a sophisticated, modern flair. Blues and Grays work well together, making it near impossible to end up with colors that clash.
Any Two Colors
In reality you can pick any two colors, and your look will feel unified.
FALL Suggestions
Pair burgundy, mustard yellow, olive green or burnt orange with jeans or khakis. These earthy colors tie in beautifully with the natural tones of autumn and add a soft, rustic feel to the photos and bring out the warmth of the season.
SPRING Suggestions
In the spring, consider pastel colors. Pick one from each list:
- Warms: Pastel Pink/Blush/Peach, Lavender, Light Yellow
- Cools: Baby Blue, Light Gray, Sky Blue
These soft, fresh colors reflect the brightness and new beginnings of spring, making them perfect for a family photo shoot.
